We translated the following excerpt from the Italian original "90 years since the first apparition at Fatima, interview with Cardinal Bertone" to English, which was published in the most widespread Catholic weekly magazine in Italy, Famiglia Cristiana (number 19/2007).

Question: Some Marian apparitions are recognized and others are not recognized. How it is necessary to behave?

Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone: "The Church is very prudent. It makes accurate analyses and gathers all the evidence. The last recognized apparitions are those of Kibeho in Rwanda. On Medjugorje, there are many favorable documents and many contrary. Perplexity is both in Rome and outside Rome, and therefore the Church has not given any official approval. This does not signify, that in a place of alleged apparitions cannot be spiritual fruits, as it happens in Medjugorje but also in many other Marian sanctuaries where the Virgin Mary has never appeared, as in Czestochowa."

Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone currently serves as Vatican Secretary of State and Camerlengo, having previously served as Archbishop of Vercelli from 1991 to 1995 and Archbishop of Genoa from 2002 to 2006. Bertone was elevated to the cardinalate in 2003. He was also the secretary of the Vatican Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) during 1995 - 2002.
